Egg Freezing
The Future of Family Planning – Your Options at the Fertility Clinic in Graz
What is Egg Freezing?
Egg freezing, also known as social egg freezing, allows young women to freeze their eggs for later use in artificial insemination. This opens up the chance to determine the time for pregnancy yourself, regardless of external circumstances.
Egg Freezing in Austria and Your Options
While egg freezing is part of family planning in many countries, legal restrictions apply in Austria. Egg retrieval and storage is only permitted if there are medical reasons, such as imminent reproductive losses due to diseases or therapies. But don’t worry, in our fertility clinic ReproCreate Graz we accompany you professionally from pre- to post-care.
Why Egg Freezing?
There are various reasons for postponing family planning:
- Advancing careers and education
- Building a Stable Relationship
- Finding the ideal partner
- Live life to the fullest
- Creating a solid foundation
Your Options and Opportunities
Egg Freezing gives you the option of stopping your biological clock and fulfilling your desire to have children at a later stage of your life. Statistics show that 60 to 85 percent of women who use frozen eggs for artificial insemination successfully become pregnant. Their age at the time of egg retrieval and artificial insemination has a significant influence on success. The best results are achieved by women whose eggs were retrieved and cryopreserved before the age of 35.

Fertility decreases with age – this is the common biological fate of all of us. In men, this decline begins later and progresses slowly; in women, in comparison, the decline in fertility begins much earlier and progresses exponentially faster.
However, the good news for anyone concerned about fertility decline is that reproductive medicine can do a lot today to counteract the effects of old age on reproductive ability. The techniques of egg and sperm freezing are now well developed and very successful.
The Austrian Reproductive Medicine Act (FMedG) does not allow “social freezing”, i.e. the preservation of fertility through cryopreservation in otherwise healthy women and men whose only reason for the procedure is to postpone the desire to have children.
However, if you suffer from a disease that can lead to (premature) depletion of your eggs or a decrease in the quality of your sperm, you have the right to preserve your fertility. Typical non-oncological diagnoses from this group are:
- Primary premature ovarian insufficiency (POI)
- Severe endometriosis of the ovary with depletion of the ovarian reserve
- Removal of ovaries/testicles due to a condition other than cancer
- Severe autoimmune diseases and/or their treatment

Please note: Fertility preservation treatments are not covered by the IVF Fund or other health insurance plans
