The Ropa Method

Joint motherhood in lesbian couples

The ROPA method (Recepción de Ovocitos de la Pareja) allows lesbian couples to become mothers together in a natural way. With this method of assisted reproduction, one partner can be the genetic mother and the other partner can carry the pregnancy to term. By transferring the eggs from one partner to another, the desired child becomes a joint project.

Requirements for ROPA fertility treatment

  • Legal requirements: In order to use the ROPA method, lesbian couples must be married in Austria, as the Reproductive Medicine Act allows the use of gametes (germ cells) within a marriage.
  • Health suitability: Both partners undergo a comprehensive medical examination at the beginning of the treatment to ensure that there are no health risks that could affect the success of the method.

Procedure of ROPA fertility treatment

Step 1: Diagnostic tests and medical advice
Both women undergo important examinations, including hormone tests and ultrasounds, to check their fertility and overall health. These diagnoses are essential to optimize the treatment strategy and realize the desire to have children.

Step 2: Egg donation by the genetic mother
The partner with the better egg quality, often the younger woman in the couple, becomes the genetic mother. It undergoes ovarian stimulation to promote egg production. This process supports the extraction of high-quality oocytes, which offer a higher implantation potential.

Step 3: Fertilization in the laboratory and embryo culture
After egg retrieval, they are fertilized in the laboratory by in vitro fertilization (IVF). The embryo develops in a controlled environment to ensure its quality.

Step 4: Preparation of the pregnant mother
Parallel to embryo culture, the partner who will carry the child is treated with hormones. Estrogen and progesterone therapy optimally prepares the uterus for embryo transfer, which increases the chances of successful implantation and pregnancy.

Step 5: Embryo transfer and confirmation of pregnancy
Embryo transfer usually takes place 3 to 5 days after fertilization. Once the embryo has been placed in the uterus, the pregnancy is confirmed by ultrasound. A clinical pregnancy is achieved when the heartbeat of the embryo is visible on ultrasound.

ROPA Method Success Rates at ReproCreate

  • Women under 38 years of age: The success rate per cycle is about 57%. The clinical pregnancy rate, i.e. the detection of a heartbeat, is 44%.
  • Women 38 years of age and older: For older women, the success rate is approximately 21% per cycle, with a clinical pregnancy rate of 16%. Since the chances increase cumulatively with each treatment, we recommend a maximum of three attempts.

Advantages of the ROPA method for lesbian couples wanting to have children

The ROPA method creates a unique bond between the partners, as both are actively involved in the creation of the child. The genetic mother contributes the genetic material, while the pregnant mother lives through the pregnancy. This method promotes emotional connection and allows for equal parenting.
