If sperm are not present in the patient’s ejaculation or testicular tissue, or if it is a lesbian couple, fertility treatment is only possible with donated sperm.
Fertility treatment with donated sperm is either intrauterine insemination (IUI)or a type of artificial insemination, i.e. IVF or ICSI.
According to Austrian law, sperm donation is allowed for both heterosexual and lesbian couples.
However, there are some legal limitations to this option:
- Costs for the provision of donated sperm , as well as costs for treatment with intrauterine insemination , are not covered by the IVF Fund;
-
the recipient couple is required by law to sign a special notarial deed ;
-
Sperm donation in Austria is semi-anonymous: from the age of 14 (or earlier if it is medically indicated), a child conceived through sperm donation has the legal right to know the basic data about the sperm donor.
Sperm donation is a simple procedure.
We will be happy to provide you with further details as part of a detailed initial consultation on sperm donation.
