Intrauterine insemination (IUI)

Sperm and egg detail

If the male partner’s sperm count is reduced but acceptable, and the fallopian tubes of the female partner (biological mother) are functional, the next step in the treatment sequence is intrauterine insemination (IUI), also called “assisted fertilization”.

Treatment typically starts with ovulation induction. After ovulation is induced, a sperm sample must be prepared in the laboratory. This sample is then transferred directly to the patient’s uterine cavity on the same day. This is done via a very thin catheter that is inserted into the uterus through the vaginal canal and cervix.
