Genetic clarification of the couple

Basic genetic assessment

A basic genetic clarification is optional, depending on personal wishes. However, before an IVF/ICSI treatment cycle, it is our recommendation to have an analysis of the number and structure of chromosomes (karyogram) performed as part of the basic diagnosis. Determination of the karyogram today is inexpensive and fast.

Studies show that chromosomal abnormalities occur more frequently in every couple who need IVF or ICSI to fulfill their desire to have children.

We strongly recommend a basic genetic examination in the following cases:

    • even after thorough diagnostic clarification, no reason for infertility could be determined in the couple
    • there have been repeated miscarriages;
    • IVF treatments have repeatedly failed.

Basic genetic counseling is an essential part of your IVF/ICSI treatment.

Targeted additional genetic analysis

In addition, targeted genetic testing examines a person’s genetic material to determine whether there are any changes in genes that could lead to the occurrence of a genetic disease or developmental disorder.

A targeted genetic analysis is useful in the following cases:

    • In men with poor sperm quality or azoospermia (no spermatozoa in ejaculation) to confirm or rule out microdeletions in the Y chromosome as the cause;
    • The patient, his/her partner or both partners are affected by a genetic disease, (congenital) disability or malformation, or there is a presumption that this is the case;
    • a genetic disease, disability or malformation has occurred in the family or relatives of the patient or his or her partner;
    • there is a relationship between the patient and the partner.

Genetic testing is not a standard test and is regulated by the Genetic Engineering Act.

More detailed genetic counselling (for monogenic diseases, i.e. diseases originating from a gene, severe polygenic diseases, complex genetic abnormalities, etc.) is offered to the affected couples by our cooperation partners in the field of human genetics.
